APC UPS: BackUPS 500 (Indian model) with USB cable

Hello. I downloaded the binary version of the Windows driver and
installed it, applying all appropriate settings to the apcupsd.conf:

%---------------------------------------------------------------------
UPSCABLE usb
UPSTYPE usb
#DEVICE /dev/com1
%---------------------------------------------------------------------

When I try via Control Panel > Administration > Services to enable the
service, I get the following error:

%---------------------------------------------------------------------
Attempting to start APCUPSD server:
Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly
%---------------------------------------------------------------------

The apcupsd.events file holds the following error repeatedly:

%---------------------------------------------------------------------
Sun Aug 21 19:56:18 IST 2005 apcupsd FATAL ERROR in apcupsd.c at line 269
Apcupsd cannot continue without a valid driver.
Sun Aug 21 19:56:18 IST 2005 apcupsd error shutdown completed
%---------------------------------------------------------------------

... for each bootup of my system after I installed apcupsd, I think.

Is this related to the following text from the manual:

%---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Problem: USB is only supported on Linux and *BSD systems (though the
*BSD is still BETA). Although the configuration script allows the usb
driver to be enabled on other platforms, it will only compile and run on
Linux and *BSD systems.
- Workaround: Try using UPS in serial mode instead of USB.
%---------------------------------------------------------------------

The workaround is not possible for me. There isn't a serial port at the
back of the UPS.

Please help. Is it possible at all to use APCUPSD on my machine or do I
go back to running PowerChute?

Thanks.

The manual is correct. There is no workaround, unless you find a USB to serial
converter that works. It is quite possible that APC can supply you a serial
cable for your UPS, they exist for the ES and CS models, but I am not sure
about your model.

The schematic (very simple) for building such a cable is in the manual, but as
I say, I don't know if it will work on your UPS.
