[Apcupsd-users] Visual notification applets for Gnome and Kde when APC UPS loses A/C power

I am presently running apcuspd on CentOS 4.4 with a Backup-UPS XS 1500.
I plan to install it on other Linux distros I have installed. It is
running fine on CentOS 4.4 and has passed the tests I tried. I am sure
it will run fin on other Linux distros.

I am probably hopelessly old-fashioned but I would actually love to see
a tray applet running under Gnome ( or Kde on other distros ) which
actually visually notifies me when my APC UPS loses A/C power, along
with allowing me to visually look at other information such as how many
minutes of UPS battery I have left before I either manually shut down or
apcupsd automatically shuts me down.

Does such functionality exist in any add-ons to apcupsd, or is such
functionality planned for future versions of it ?

I do greatly appreciate the work that has been done to produce apcupsd
for Linux users since the APC Powerchute editions for Linux all
ridiculously demand a Windows server in order to work, a really demented
programming idea along the lines of "Oh, you want to buy this pack of
chewing gum ? Well we can only sell it to you if you buy this deluxe
edition of the book 'How To Chew Gum Effectively'".

But I am just not the real he-man Linux type either and actually like
the idea of friendly end-user software notifying me when a power loss or
a forced shutdown is about to occur. So if there is some add-on to
apcupsd which supplies this functionality I would love to get it, even
purchase it ( heaven forbid <g> ) if necessary if it is reasonably priced.

Thanks !

You want gapcmon. It's present in the 3.13.x development series and will
be in 3.14 final when it is released. gapcmon will give you tray icons
for one or more UPSes on Gnome or KDE.

That's great. I look forward to the 3.14 release. Under CentOS 4.4,
which is compatible with RHEL4, I have the 3.10.18 release from a binary
RPM in a CentOS repository. When the 3.14 release comes out I will try
that, and see if you have a binary repository for it in your sourceforge
project, else I will try to build it from source.

Edward,

http://gapcmon.sourceforge.net is basically the same package and its
binary are built on a FC5 system.
The gapcmon in the apcupsd distribution is comaptible with GTK V2.4,
while the independent gapcmon
is likely requires GTK V2.4+

For gapcmon you choices are to configure and compile the code inside
apcupsd source distribution, or
use the source or binary from the independent package at
gapcmon.sourceforge.net.

Either way, let me know if you need assistance.

I have managed to get gapcmon working with apcupsd in OpenSuse 10.2.
Very nice. I have configured it with the Use Tray Icon for my UPS. Is
there any way to have it present the tray icon on startup and then Close
so that I only see the Tray Icon and not the application.

I know that if I start it manually the tray icon will appear but then I
must choose Close to get it to close the application and leave the tray
icon. Is there a command by which I can start and close it at startup so
that only the tray icon is left ?

True, right now thats the only way it works, by pressing close. I will
add a command-line option to have it go straight to tray-icon if ...
Give me a couple of days.

Edward,

I just committed the changes to the apcupsd cvs, and the gapcmon cvs on
sourceforge. I also released a Fedora Core 6 binary and the updated
sources to http://gapcmon.sourceforge.net/ as release 0.8.4 in the
download area.

If the control.panel "use_systray" checkbox is clicked then the app will
start in icon-mode. If its not clicked it will present its control
panel window. While testing I noticed that the monitor windows do not
present themselves unless asked for by clicking on the active.monitor
page of the control.panel or by clicking the icon. The CVS sources also
correct this oversite, but those changes are not in the 0.8.4 release.
However, they are queued to be included in the next release of either
apcupsd or gapcmon.

Thanks for using APCUPSD and let us know if there is anything else we
can do to support you.

The functionality you describe exists already in gnome-power-manager
which provides much of the functionality of a stand-alone apcupsd within
the GNOME environment.

Unfortunately this is not available in CentOS 4.4, which is compatible
with RHEL4. I would have to build it from source. I will look at it for
FC6, which I am also running.

This appears to be a totally separate daemon from apcupsd. I will check
it out at its web page. Thanks !

Additionally, If you find that gapcmon is missing something specific; tell us
what it is and we may add it to the todo list.

In my case with a Back-UPS LS 500 and apcupsd 3.13.2 (22 February
2006) debian, I wrote two such applications. One, a little applet for
X that tells me by the second the TIMELEFT variable (jpeg image
attached: 1st=TIMELEFT, 2nd=TOD, 3rd=FREEMB), the other similar but
for VT's where I spend a good deal of time.

As for warning when the power goes: I have only the PC + modem plugged
into the battery so the screen goes blank when the power goes and the
alarm goes off.

You are welcome to both of them.
