Hi! I've got a litte problem with my new APC Smart-UPS 750VA LCD (SMT750I).
Apcupsd won't recognize it.
Since my Windows 2008 R2 Server 64Bit is not so kind as to accept the
apcupsd USB driver, I have to use the enclosed serial cable.
But no matter what I do the UPS is not recognized.
Is there a way to get it working? (It worked like a charm with my old APC
Smart-UPS 700VA)
Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 (64-Bit, Hyper-V Role enabled)
APC Smart-UPS 750VA LCD (SMT750I) with serial cable (DB-9F --> RJ45)
apcupsd 3.14.8
Thanks in advance
Michael
Make sure these options are set as follows in your apcupsd.conf file :

UPSCABLE smart
UPSTYPE smartups
DEVICE COMx

where "x" is is number of the COM ( serial port ) you're using, eg. COM1 .

Hi Jonathan!
Thanks for the quick reply!
UPSCABLE smart
UPSTYPE apcsmart
DEVICE COM1
The COM-port is the same as before, but apcupsd doesn't recognize the new
UPS.
I can't imagine why there'd be a serial mouse conflict in Win2k8 but one
never knows. See here :

http://apcupsd.org/manual/manual.html#configuring-apcupsd-on-windows
Post by Michael Kirschner
I tried to change Upstype to "smartups" but it didn't work either (I also
couldn't find the parameter in the manual!)
That can be found here :

Regards,
Michael
I don't know much about configuring apcupsd outside of Linux so I may be (
and may have been ) talking out of my *ss.

This is another one of those microlink issues. IIRC, the serial port on
those UPS's will *only* talk microlink and nothing else. So you have to
get the USB driver working and then get limited functionality, but
enough to shut down a system in a power outage.

I've had no trouble with the prototype driver I downloaded some time ago
from a link on this mailing list. I haven't specically tried it on
2008R2x64, but I don't see why it would be too different since
Win7SP1x64 works fine. Just a matter of using the right manual install
procedure.

On my old Smart-UPS 1000 there is a very annoying issue:

If you have ever connected a USB cable to the UPS and connected said
cable to a computer the UPS shuts down the serial port. The only way
to get the serial port working is to disconnect the USB cable, power
all equipment connect to the UPS down, turn off the UPS, disconnect
from line power and then press and hold the OFF-button on the UPS for
at least 8 seconds until a very faint clicking noise is heard. After
this noise was heard, reconnect line power and then power up the UPS
and the equipment.

This applies, at least, to my version of the Smart-UPS 1000 and the
1500 model of the time.

For some reason, the 2200 and 3000 models from the same time don't
suffer from this stupidity.

If this issue applies then there should be an entry in the
knowledgebase at the APC website.

Hi Kris!

I did some testing with a Windows XP machine and I think you are right (microlink issue). I tried to use the OS native UPS Service and it couldn't connect to the UPS. After that I tried to install the Powerchute Single Agent and it worked.
The last thing I tested (after uninstalling Powerchute) and failed to get working was installing apcupsd with USB driver.
The UPS just shows up as "HID-UPS-Battery", I can't even install the USB driver manually.
It says something like "there is no information about the hardware in the given location" (sorry, but my version of Windows XP is german so I don't know the exact corresponding english error message).
Anyway I had a look at the 'apcupsd.inf' located in the driver directory of apcupsd and found the following hardware ID in the file:
"American Power Conversion USB UPS (Apcupsd)"=LIBUSB_DEV, USB\VID_051d&PID_0002

Problem is that the 'HID-UPS-Battery' shows this hardware ID:
HID\VID_051D&PID_0003\6&2D411FBB&0&0000
and I think that is the problem why the installation of the USB driver fails.

Regards,
Michael

I've been using winapcupsd-3.14.8-winusb2.exe until 3.14.9 comes out.

Find it here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/apcupsd/files/win-binaries%20-%20Testing/

I forget what the other two are, but winusb2 is the newest. I also saw a
testing 3.14.9, but I haven't touched it.

Hello Uwe!

Just checked if the serial port of the UPS is working properly (Windows XP machine with PowerChute Single Node Agent). It works fine, but I am still not able to get apcupsd working with my SMT750I (not even USB).

Michael
